Link/Lead Schools

The Stimulating Physics Network works with Link and Lead Schools to build the capacity for high-quality CPD within local networks.

We do this in three ways:

LEAD SCHOOLS

WHAT DOES A LEAD SCHOOL DO?

A Lead School teacher will be seconded to the IOP and act as a School-based Physics Coach (SPC) for typically one day a week. With IOP support, the Lead School will identify and partner a group of 10 schools within the area, providing them with CPD workshops, networking opportunities and other activities..

WHAT SUPPORT DOES A LEAD SCHOOL GET?

The IOP will award the school the status of 'Stimulating Physics Network Lead School' for the term of the agreement. In addition, the school will be offered resources, pupil engagement activities, a 3-day residential coaching CPD course, and online peer-to-peer support via the TalkPhysics community.

WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?

The Institute will reimburse 20% of the SPC's salary, usually up to £10,000.

LINK SCHOOLS

WHAT DOES A LINK SCHOOL DO?

A link school provides CPD workshops and networking opportunities for partner schools in the area.

WHAT SUPPORT DOES A LINK SCHOOL GET?

Working with the school, a Teaching and Learning Coach (TLC) will develop and deliver a programme of CPD and networking events, available to all teachers of physics in schools in the local area. Link School activities are led by a TLC.

WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?

This will be of no cost to your school.

LINK+ SCHOOLS

WHAT DOES A LINK+ SCHOOL DO?

With some support from the IOP, the School will develop and deliver a programme of CPD and networking events, available to all teachers of physics in schools in the local area. CPD activities are led by a nominated 'Advisor' from within the School's teaching staff.

WHAT SUPPORT DOES A LINK+ SCHOOL GET?

The School will be offered resources, pupil engagement activities led or facilitated by the Advisor and or GBO, annual regional teacher CPD days, residential CPD Summer Schools for non-specialist teachers of physics, online peer-to-peer support via the TalkPhysics online community.

WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?

The School-Based Adviser will deliver three CPD workshops per annum and the IOP will pay the school up to £1500 (£500 per event).

Link and Lead Schools receive funding, support, and guidance to:

  • Become leading providers of no-cost physics CPD and support for local teachers.
  • Build the capacity of their own teachers to lead effective coaching and CPD.
  • Embed the expertise of our Teaching and Learning Coaches within local networks.

A word from our teachers:

"Work done with KS2 teachers had raised the profile of the school in local primaries’ eyes and had positive results in pupil recruitment; and the work of the dept. in providing CPD to colleagues from other schools made the school a more attractive place to work for specialist physics teachers and so helped with retention and recruitment issues."
